Amidst the funkiness of Portland’s North Mississippi neighborhood, across from the gravel lot with the Waffle cart (and its picnic tables and chain link fence), down the street from the Rebuilding Center (home to all things salvaged and recyclable), there is an unassuming building in which a group of (mostly) men go about the business of making elegant, understated furniture for the ages.

As part of its sustainability initiative, Altura installed a 10-kilowatt solar photovoltaic panel array in August 2011. The panels now produce 20% of the electricity needed to power the shop and main office. This follows a shop upgrade to energy efficient T12 lighting in December 2010.
Altura’s Duette Table is the company’s first design to be made using the warm toned, highly sought after Western or “Claro” Walnut. Through a local supplier these individually charactered boards can be selected by an actual visit or electronically with digital images. Each table top spec and available flitch selection will produce the size and parameters of a unique artistic presentation of grain and edge detail.
